1. Pruning and Trimming

  • How often: Every 4 to 6 weeks

  • Why: Regular pruning is essential for keeping plants healthy and aesthetically pleasing. It helps control growth, remove dead or diseased branches, and promote new growth. In Singapore’s tropical climate, where plants can grow quickly, more frequent trimming may be needed, especially for fast-growing species like Heliconias and Bougainvilleas.

  • Experience: More time is needed to prune to plants in each session if the frequency between pruning session is more than 2 months as they will be more dead branches. The plants do not look healthy and it is not a pleasant sight to behold for extended period of time.

2. Weeding

  • How often: Weekly

  • Why: Weeds compete with your plants for nutrients, sunlight, and water. Frequent weeding helps prevent them from taking over your garden. Regular mulching can reduce the need for frequent weeding by suppressing weed growth.

  • Experience: They are usually done with pruning during garden maintenance. Extensive weed growth not removed for a long time before pruning can result in more time  in maintenance. Weeds that require screw driver to remove the the weeds with roots is most time-consuming.

3. Pest and Disease Management

  • How often: Monitor weekly, treat as needed

  • Why: In Singapore’s humid climate, pests and fungal diseases can develop quickly. Regularly check for signs of pests or disease and treat them immediately using natural or chemical remedies.

  • Experience: To keep your plants healthy and prevent problems from spreading, it is best to deal with pests and diseases as soon as you notice them. Regularly checking your plants during maintenance will help you catch issues early.

4. Watering

  • How often: after adding fertilizers and 2 to 3 times a week (depending on rainfall)

  • Why: Watering needs can vary based on the weather and the plants you have. Tropical plants generally need more water, but during Singapore’s rainy season, you may need to water less. Ensure plants receive deep watering, encouraging roots to grow deeper and making them more drought-resistant.

  • Experience: It is important to water indoor plants frequently as well as they are not exposed to the outdoor environment. A moisture meter can be used to monitor the moisture of soil to prevent over watering and under watering

5. Fertilizing

  • How often: Every 2 weeks(chemical ferilizers)                                                                      Every 3 to 4 months (organic fertilizers)

  • Why: Regular fertilization keeps your plants nourished and ensures they grow strong and vibrant. Organic fertilizers or slow-release fertilizers can be applied less frequently but still provide a steady supply of nutrients.

  • Experience: Choose the right type of fertilizers for the plants. You can consider compost together with wood chips for mulching as alternatives to slow release fertilizers and to suppress weed growth.

6. Lawn Care (for landed properties)

  • How often: Mowing every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the season

  • Why: Regular mowing ensures that your grass stays healthy and thick. During the rainy season, grass may grow faster and require more frequent cutting, while in drier months, you may be able to mow less frequently.

  • Experience: Do not cut the lawn too deep as it can damage the turf if the lawn is not mowed for extended period of time. The crown can be damaged and it is difficult for the stressed root to absorb water and nutrients. Instead, gradually mow the lawn in weekly or interval instead.
